Surgical technicians, also called surgical techs or scrub nurses, are trained in surgical tech schools and go on to become highly paid skilled hospital workers or other health care fields. Even though it is a surgical techs job to perform a critical and vital role in the operating room, they don't receive much of the fame.The responsibilities of a surgical tech are first and foremost to sterilize the operating room, all surgical instruments, count and place surgical instruments in proper order for the surgeon, make sure they have created a sterile environment, monitor all vital signs of the patient,  wash and shave the area on the patient for the surgery, and sometimes suture the wound site.

Surgical technicians are also responsible for assisting the surgeons and assistants in suiting up in their gowns and gloves. During surgery, the surgical tech is the main helper by handing instruments to the surgeon and his assistant, placing sanitary drapes around the operating area, and recounting instruments when the surgery is complete. The surgical tech must then dispose of all hazardous waste, and again sterilize the operating room for the next patient. Because this is a highly skilled job, one must attend a surgical tech school to become a surgical technician. The outlook for the need of surgical techs looks great and there's no evidence of it slowing down, instead it's growing faster than average, especially when the surgical technician is certified. Surgical tech schools have training classes for anywhere from nine to twenty four months long. There are over four hundred surgical tech schools to choose from, and all you need to apply is a high school diploma or GED.

If you are interested in attending a surgical tech school, some of the things you will learn in a classroom setting are anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, medical terminology and medical ethics of course. You will also learn the method of sterilizing surgical equipment and instruments along with disease prevention. Once a student has completed training in a surgical tech school, he or she then should take the test to become certified as more hospitals are now requiring their surgical techs to be certified before hiring. The pay scale for a surgical tech who is certified is approximately $41,000 per year. As you can see, becoming a surgical technician leads to a challenging yet exciting and lucrative career.
