Becoming a Surgical Technologist/Technician

Once you decide that the surgical field is for you, you will need to find a school that works for you. There are different ways to become a surgical technician. You can earn a diploma in which the program generally takes 5 quarters to complete. Or you can go for a 2 year associates course in which you earn a degree. You need to make sure that the program you are attending is accredited through a nationally recognized agency. This type of degree is generally not offered on line so you will need to find a campus in your area.

You will need to have general knowledge in core content areas such as Math, Science and Writing. Taking college level course will truly enhance your learning experience and prepare you for regular surgical tech courses such as Anatomy & physiology, Medical Terminology and Surgical Procedures. Most of your learning will be hands on, often with internships at local hospitals and surgical facilities. The only way that you can succeed is to take your studies seriously and be prepared to "hit the books".

Your duties as a surgical technologist will be to always maintain a clean and sterile environment for the doctors and nurses to perform necessary surgeries properly. You will be in charge of scrubbing in and keeping instruments sterile and organized. You may be asked to assist by handing instruments to the physicians. You will also have to have knowledge of surgical machines, such as laser and suction machines. You will be in charge of prepping a patient before and after surgery. All of this you will learn in the classroom as well as hands on. Surgical technologists play a very important role in the operating room.

Once you have completed your training, whether earning a diploma or a degree, you will need to pass the National Certification Exam. The multiple choice exam is offered through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Once you pass the exam you are a Certified Surgical Technologist or a CST. You must make sure to renew your certification every 4 years.

As you enter the field of surgical technologist you can expect to earn as much as $39,000. If you have chosen to go for the degree you may earn more than if you just received a diploma.
